Gray foxes have almost twice as many chromosomes as red foxes, making crossbreeding between the two virtually impossible genetically. As for visually distinguishing a red fox from a gray, part of the body, neck, tail and legs of some gray foxes can be the same orangish color as a red fox. On the other hand, the body of a red fox is usually all the same orange color except for white chest and underside.
